Our Second Farm!
As the tractor and wagon wind their way up Stewart Road through the bush from the home farm to our second farm, the crew might encounter deer, a black bear, foxes, wild turkeys, a partridge running across the dirt lane, rabbits, groundhogs, and lots of other wildlife which we (and our neighbours) do our best to make feel welcome on our farm.

Also, the crew will pass our fields of buckwheat and baled hay before reaching the fields where our crops are planted.

At our second farm, the centre of activity is the old barn where the crew feels quite at home. The crew knows where every crop is planted in our extensive 50 plus acre planting which is no easy feat. But we have field maps which help guide them so that it is easy to find a row of red carrots or black plum tomatoes for example.
The crew is also quite skilled at harvesting, washing, and bunching. Those perfectly sized golden beets bunched beautifully together at the Market or in our home delivery baskets are not pulled out of the ground that way. They take a lot of washing and sizing as you can see from the photos in this section of our virtual farm tour.
And, yes, it is very easy to get wet while washing and bunching and the crew is often playful as they perform their tasks.
The end result is a mass of beautifully sized bunches of carrots, beets, turnips, and many other crops for the enjoyment of all our market and home delivery customers.

We have a special series of photos which show how our fingerlings are harvested - by hand - as is every crop on our farm. Heirloom vegetables do not grow with uniformity so they must all be harvested by hand which of course adds to their cost. But we think the extra effort is well worth it because in the end our customers treasure the wonderful flavours of our certified organic, heirloom vegetables.
Our crops are irrigated and our vegetables washed with water from our own drilled wells. Our water is tested every year for purity. Consequently, our vegetables never see a drop of contaminated river or creek water which is all part of certified organic farming.
Perhaps it is obvious from the pictures on these pages, but our crew takes pride in their work and view every bunch of carrots as their own personal masterpiece!
