| Welcome
to Stuart Collins and Terry Stewart, proprietors of Bryson
Farms, near Shawville, Quebec, and first time advertisers
in the NEN. Bryson Farms produces and home delivers
fresh, flavorful, certified organic produce of every imaginable
colour and variety.
If you
are tempted to think that the vegetable spectrum is pretty
monotonous and dull (especially after a long winter) Bryson's
extraordinary range of produce will swiftly turn that view
on its head. Their fruits and veggies are grown organically
from special heirloom and heritage seed and their crops include
no fewer than 50 types of potatoes; pink, orange, black, purple
and yellow tomatoes; yellow, white, purple, orange and round
carrots; all types of beets; exotic watermelons; squashes;
eggplants; cucumbers; and every conceivable type of "greens"
from romaines, to leaf lettuces, oriental greens, edible flowers,
endives, kale, arugula, cress, sorrel, chards... and the list
goes on!
Greenhouse
greens are grown year round at Bryson's while root
crops such as carrots, baby beets, radishes, cabbages etc.
are started in June and field crops in July.
Both Stuart
and Terry, who has a degree in Agriculture from the University
of Guelph, spend much of their time on the Internet and in
contact with other organic growers searching out new and interesting
varieties of heirloom seed to add to their impressive collection
of exotic produce.
The pleasures
of Bryson's freshly picked produce have already attracted
a distinguished clientele including our own Epicuria, Juniper
and Domus Restaurants, Rideau Hall and the House of Commons.
Their
home delivery service to individual households also operates
year round, and Stuart reports that there are already two
regular weekly trips to the Burgh. In the case of greens,
the minimum order is $20 for 2 8-ounce bag of mixed greens,
the precise contents of which vary from week to week depending
on freshness, availability and Stuart and Terry's creative
impulses!
The greens
and all Bryson's produce are picked the day before
they reach your doorstep, and double washed before packing
so they are ready to go straight on to the table. Regular
produce (potatoes, carrots, squashes, eggplants, onions etc.
etc.) is sold at $25 for a single basket $35 for a double
basket (enough to feed two people for a week). To accommodate
busy households, Bryson's will deliver your order directly
to your cooler if you leave it on the doorstep, or in a shady
spot in the backyard. Often Stuart and Terry will even include
recipes and cooking suggestions for especially unusual varieties
of produce that might flummox even an experienced chef.
Anyone
interested in sampling their wares can find them each Sunday
morning from 10:00 am to noon at the organic farmers' market
at Bank Street and Heron Road (by St. Parsifal School). Stuart's
daughter Katie and son Bryson, also active participants in
the family business, are often on hand at the market to man
Bryson's booth.
Best of
luck in your wonderful enterprise, Terry, Stuart and family.
As summer approaches, the prospect of finding a heaping basket
of fresh, flavorful produce on the doorstep at the end of
a long day looks awfully attractive! |
